The students who do not have the sufficient TOEFL or IELTS  scores enroll to the English preparatory class.

Only SUNY Fredonia DDP students will be able to take English Proficiency Exam held by School of Foreign Langauges. If the students succeed in the English Proficiency Exam by having a score of 64,5 out of 100, then these students will get the right to enroll for the freshman courses. Before departing for US to study in the partner university, these students will also take a Speaking exam.If they succeed in this exam as well, they will be able to study at SUNY Fredonia.

Students who enroll to the preparatory class take the placement exam in order to specify their English proficiency levels offered by IUE School of Foreign Languages on a date announced in the Academic Calendar on the university’s web site.

The students are given maximum 2 years to provide English Proficiency condition. During this time, SUNY students may take as many TOEFL or IELTS exams as they like on condition that they take it once a month, in a type they like (classic, with computer, internet based). Institutional TOEFL exam results are valid only if they are made in one of the SUNY campuses or under the supervision of an authority from SUNY campuses. Additionally, to be valid only for Fredonia Campus students, the scores of Institutional TOEFL exams taken at Turkish American Associations are also acceptable. Institutional TOEFL exams, which are made in centers other than that, are not valid.

Once a SUNY student gets the necessary TOEFL or IELTS score, and presents the examination result to the Office of Student Affairs and Office of International Relations, s/he is exempt from studying at preparatory class and gets the right to take undergraduate courses of the following academic year. TOEFL  or IELTS scores should be submitted at the end of the add-drop term at the latest.

In order for SUNY Preparatory class students to start taking undergraduate courses, they have to be successful in TOEFL or IELTS exam. This rule is set by the partner universities in the USA and Higher Education Council of Turkey. Alternative formulas such as passing on condition or starting to take undergraduate program courses while still studying in preparatory class cannot be accepted.

Even if the students succeed in English Proficiency Exam by getting the sufficient score, it is compulsory to submit the required TOEFL or IELTS  score in order to start taking undergraduate freshman courses.

In accordance with the standing orders of the university, attendance is compulsory. This rule is also valid for SUNY preparatory class students. If  SUNY Preparatory class students wish to take their English education abroad, they may be on leave and attend the English Preparatory programs of SUNY campuses on the condition that they pay their IUE preparatory class fee.
